Professor Alan Davidson

Paediatric Oncologist and Professor of Paediatrics, Red Cross Children's Hospital, Cape Town

Professor Davidson (MBChB, FCPaed, CMO, MPhil) is the head of the Paediatric Haematology-Oncology Service at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and the University of Cape Town. His clinical and research interests include paediatric brain tumours, HIV-related cancers, genetic predisposition syndromes, stem cell transplantation for primary immunodeficiency and adapted therapy regimens for low- and middle-income settings. He co-chairs the South African Paediatric Brain Tumour Workshop and serves as the vice-president of the Society for NeuroOncology’s Sub-Saharan Africa branch. He has served the International Society of Paediatric Oncology as a Global Health Network co-chair and as the chair of the Advocacy Committee. As a professor in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Cape Town, he has served for more than a decade as the director of postgraduate education. He has been a member of the paediatric council of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa since 2008 and its president since 2017. He is a member of the board of the Children’s Hospital Trust, as well as the board of RedX Radio.
